Daily weight is noise; the trend is signal
Day-to-day weight swings of 1–2 kg are normal and mostly meaningless: water retention from sodium and carbohydrate (each gram of stored glycogen binds roughly 3 g of water), gut contents, hormonal cycles. A single Tuesday weigh-in says almost nothing. A 7-day rolling average says a lot, and a 3-week trend line is the real instrument. How often should I weigh myself when tracking calories?
Daily, same time, same conditions (morning, after the bathroom, before eating) — then read only the weekly average. Daily weighing sounds obsessive but is actually the *less* stressful option once you understand the average is the signal; a single weekly weigh-in can land on a random water spike and mislead you for a week.
How long before my weight trend tells me my real maintenance calories?
Two to three weeks of consistent logging is usually enough. Compute your average daily intake and your average weekly weight change; every 0.1 kg/week of change represents roughly a 110 kcal/day imbalance (7,700 × 0.1 ÷ 7).
Why did my weight jump a kilo overnight?
Almost certainly water and gut contents, not fat. Gaining a kilogram of body fat requires roughly a 7,700 kcal surplus — you didn't accidentally eat that. High-sodium or high-carbohydrate days pull extra water into the body; it leaves on its own within days.
Should I lower my calories every time weight loss stalls?
Not immediately. First check the trend over a full two weeks (a stall shorter than that is usually water masking fat loss), and check your logging honesty on weekends. If the 2–3 week trend is truly flat, reduce by 150–200 kcal or add activity — small corrections, then re-measure.
