How Large Should the Deficit Be?
There is no single target that follows from wanting to lose weight. A fixed calorie-per-kilogram calculation cannot reliably predict an individual's progress.
| Question | What Needs Review |
|---|---|
| Is weight loss appropriate? | Individual health and circumstances |
| What is expenditure? | Formula inputs and activity assumptions |
| What is being eaten? | Actual quantities, records and missing data |
| Is the plan suitable? | Nutritional adequacy and appropriate support |
NICE guidance emphasises individual needs and support for restrictive dietary approaches. See calorie deficits and losing 5 kg for calculation limits.
For a worked arithmetic example, an assumed 2,200 kcal maintenance estimate and 1,900 kcal intake give a 300 kcal difference. That does not prove a measured deficit or a particular weekly loss. The TDEE guide explains the assumptions.
How Many Calories Do You Burn Per Day?
The calorie-needs calculator predicts resting expenditure and applies an activity assumption. It does not directly measure metabolism or provide an individually assessed diet.
| Input | Role |
|---|---|
| Weight, height and age | Inputs to the resting-energy equation |
| Equation sex coefficient | Selects the equation constant |
| Activity factor | Additional assumption for daily expenditure |
The original article's profile table omitted age and height, so its figures could not be reproduced from the displayed inputs. See daily energy needs for fully specified worked examples.
A comparison with food and weight records can provide context, but it does not turn an estimate into a precise expenditure measurement.
Why Can Weight Plateau?
A chart alone cannot identify the cause. Review measurement conditions, changes in routine, assumptions and record completeness rather than automatically cutting food.
| Area | What to Check |
|---|---|
| Measurements | Timing, conditions and missing readings |
| Food entries | Amounts, source matches and estimates |
| Activity | Whether the routine or recorded duration changed |
| Health context | Whether professional review is needed |
There is no diagnostic three-week rule established here. See weight changes and plateaus. Drinks and additions can be included in a complete record, but values depend on actual amounts; see alcohol examples.
What Should You Eat When Managing Weight?
An energy total does not establish that a diet is nutritionally complete. Food choices and individual needs require more than a generic macro or calorie target.
- Check the actual ingredients and portions.
- Keep unknown nutrient values distinct from zero.
- Do not infer a universal protein target or food allowance from an app default.
Macronutrients explains reference values and their limits. The 1,500 kcal menu and 1,200 kcal menu are historical illustrations with limitations, not prescriptions based on sex or occupation. A low-energy plan needs appropriate assessment and support.
How Can You Keep a Record?
Calorie.one displays saved meals against the goal you enter. Text and authenticated photo flows suggest ingredients and quantities using USDA and Open Food Facts where suitable matches exist. Review sources, portions and missing values before saving.
A daily budget or coach response is not an individual clinical assessment. Do not treat an unlogged day as zero or compensate for a meal by imposing extra restriction. Free access is subject to configured limits. The calculator explains its expenditure estimate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 1,200 Calories a Day Too Little?
A 1,200 kcal target is within the low-energy range addressed by NICE, which places these diets in supported care for eligible adults. Do not adopt it from a generic article or use another fixed target as an automatic substitute.
How Quickly Can You Lose Weight Healthily?
The CDC describes about 1-2 lb (0.45-0.9 kg) per week as general gradual-loss guidance. That is not a personal prescription or a reason to restrict more to meet a deadline. Individual circumstances and nutritional adequacy matter; rapid scale changes are not necessarily fat loss.
Do I Have to Count Calories Forever?
No. Tracking is optional and its purpose and duration depend on the person. A detailed record is not automatically appropriate or useful for everyone.
Does Exercise Count as Extra Calories I Can Eat?
Check whether activity is already included in the budget and whether the reported value is gross or net. Device readings are estimates, and there is no universal rule to eat back half. See walking calculations.
