ChatGPT Calorie Tracker Prompt With a Worked Example

Published about 4 min read

To use ChatGPT for calorie tracking, provide the foods, edible weights, raw or cooked state and nutrition values when available. Ask it to list assumptions, request missing details and show calories for each ingredient before totaling the meal. A prompt can organize the calculation, but it cannot measure portions from a photo or guarantee that a food match or nutrition value is correct.

ChatGPT can help turn meal notes into a calculation you can inspect. The useful prompt asks for missing information before producing a confident total. Start with a label or a specific food record when you have one; otherwise keep estimated values visibly separate.

Help me calculate the calories in a meal. Do not set a diet target.

Foods and amounts: [list each ingredient and edible weight in grams]
Preparation: [raw/cooked, drained, with/without skin, etc.]
Added fats, sauces and drinks: [amounts, or explicitly unknown]
Nutrition values: [paste label or database kcal per 100 g, with source]
Recipe yield and portion eaten: [if this is part of a batch]

Before calculating, ask about missing information that could materially
change the result. Do not invent an exact weight from a photo.
Separate supplied facts from your assumptions. If a nutrition value is
missing, ask for a source or mark any provisional value as unverified.
Do not invent USDA record IDs, sources or links.

Show a table: ingredient, raw/cooked state, grams, kcal per 100 g,
source, calculation and kcal. Use grams x kcal per 100 g / 100.
Keep unrounded values for the total, then round the meal total.
Do not count cooking fat twice if it is included in a prepared-food row.
List unresolved assumptions and what I should check before saving.

For US portions, 1 oz by weight is about 28.35 g and 1 lb is about 454 g. A fluid ounce measures volume, so it cannot be converted to food weight without knowing the food and its density. “One cup of rice” also needs a cooking state and a suitable serving weight.

A worked meal example you can check

Suppose you ate 150 g cooked chicken breast, 180 g cooked white rice and 5 g olive oil. That is about 5.3 oz chicken and 6.3 oz rice. For this example, use the displayed reference values from our USDA-linked roasted chicken breast, cooked white rice and olive oil pages. These values describe particular records, not every recipe.

IngredientWeightReference kcal per 100 gCalculationCalories
Chicken breast, cooked/roasted150 g165150 × 165 / 100247.5
White rice, cooked180 g130180 × 130 / 100234
Olive oil5 g8845 × 884 / 10044.2
Total247.5 + 234 + 44.2525.7

The rounded total is 526 kcal. This assumes the chicken and rice have no additional fat included beyond the separate 5 g oil, and that all of that oil was eaten. It does not include an unseen sauce or a drink. Those are recipe facts to confirm, not things a chatbot can infer from the arithmetic.

If the oil was actually 10 g, the total becomes 569.9 kcal, rounded to 570 kcal. If “150 g chicken” was its raw weight, do not keep the cooked record: select the matching raw entry and recalculate. See raw versus cooked weights.

How do you track a homemade recipe?

Calculate the entire batch first. Include ingredients that remain in the food, then weigh the finished edible batch and your serving in the same state.

For example, an illustrative recipe totaling 2,400 kcal and weighing 1,600 g after cooking has 150 kcal per 100 g. A 400 g serving contains 600 kcal: 2,400 × 400 / 1,600. Water loss changes the finished weight and calories per gram; it does not justify switching only some ingredients to cooked records.

If you discard fat, broth or part of the recipe, document that limitation. Dividing by four servings is only appropriate if the four servings contain comparable shares of the ingredients. Our mixed-meal tracking guide covers ingredient breakdowns.

Can ChatGPT count calories from a photo?

It can suggest foods and portions, but those suggestions need review. OpenAI's image-input documentation describes image interpretation limits. A meal photo does not establish its weight, recipe or absorbed cooking fat. Supply those details in text when known.

Ask the model to name uncertain items instead of filling them in silently. “Could this sauce be yogurt or mayonnaise?” is a useful follow-up because the recipe difference matters. A precise-looking total is not evidence that either identification is correct.

Check the answer before putting it in your diary

Compare each row with the source you provided. Confirm grams versus ounces, raw versus cooked state, edible weight and the serving size on packaged foods. Recalculate at least the total and any calorie-dense addition. A citation should lead to the matching food record, not just a database homepage.

A conversation is also different from a dedicated diary: confirm the date, avoid counting a correction as a second meal, and keep a record you can review or export. If you want an ingredient preview connected to a food diary, explore Calorie.one and its free AI access and limits.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best ChatGPT prompt for counting calories?

A useful prompt supplies edible weights and preparation state, asks about missing ingredients, identifies nutrition sources and shows the arithmetic for each row. No wording guarantees accurate food recognition or database matches; verify the output before saving it.

Can I use ChatGPT as a free calorie tracker?

You can use the access available on your account to organize descriptions and calculations. Usage limits and available tools vary. You still need to maintain and verify the diary, including dates, corrected entries and source values.

Why does ChatGPT give different calories for the same meal?

It may assume a different portion, recipe or food record, or make a calculation error. Reuse explicit weights and source values, and ask it to show which assumption changed. Do not average two unexplained totals as a substitute for checking them.

Should I upload my whole food diary or health records?

For a meal calculation, ingredient names, quantities and nutrition values are usually sufficient. Remove unrelated personal information and check the service's current data controls before sharing a diary or photos.
