Energy comes from USDA nutrient 1008. Salt is calculated as sodium × 2.5, with unit conversion to grams. It is not a separately measured salt value.

Preparation

Red wine is 85 kcal per 100 ml, two more than white and two more than the generic table row — a difference of about three calories a glass, which is inside the margin of any pour. Red is fermented with the skins, which supplies the colour and the tannins but almost no energy. Sweet and fortified reds are a different matter and sit well above this figure.

Logging this food

A 5 fl oz serving is 147 g and 125 kcal; a fluid ounce is 29 g and 25. A bottle is about 630 kcal. Wine glasses have grown considerably, and a generous home pour is often 200 ml rather than 150 — that is 170 kcal rather than 125, and it happens without anyone deciding to have more.

Swaps and alternatives

White wine is 82 kcal per 100 ml and table wine 83: within this family the choice of wine changes nothing. Spirits with a zero-calorie mixer are the lighter option per unit of alcohol at 97 kcal a jigger. Everything else is portion — a smaller glass, or fewer of them.
